Colorado Registration FAQ

As you should know, Colorado will require every loan officer to be registered by Jan,1, 2007. CMLA has a great FAQ that you can download concerning the process. In my opinion, the state government does not posses the competence to properly run a program like this. The most current indication of this is CMLA's recommendation to get the process underway by September 1st. Anyway, the time to act is now. This file will help streamline the process.

Broker Registration Editorial

The Rocky Mountain News weighs in on Mortgage Broker Registration:
"HB 1161 could wipe the state off that list. It would require brokers to register with the Division of Real Estate every three years and pay a modest administrative fee. There are registration exemptions for licensed lending institutions and homeowners who are financing their own sales. "

CMLA joins CAMB on Fraud bill

From the Denver Post: "Two rival mortgage-industry trade groups have joined to push a bill that would create and finance a board to prosecute people who commit mortgage fraud."

I don't like it. Not only does it set up a giant bureaucracy, they want consumers to pay for it. Placing a fee on every closing (which will be passed on the consumer one way or another) to fund prosecution of the law breakers makes no sense, isn't that what our tax dollars are for? In the end, I bet the closing fees, registration fees and bonding will do nothing to stop the crooks while adding new layers to an already overfunded state government.

Appraiser Assisted Mortgage Fraud

I received the following email today from Phil rice of MKG Appraisal here in Colorado. I did not fact check his work but have no reason to doubt him. Clearly, this shows how it only takes a few people to look the other way in performing their small part of the loan process to result in huge losses for the industry as a whole. Thanks for the heads up Phil.

I have been doing a lot of research on the topic(s) of:
housing bubble - mortgage fraud

Because I admire your Website and I think you have something to say, I put a link to your Website on mine. You can find the link at:

http://www.mkgappraisal.com/whos_who.htm

I would encourage you to take a look at a summary I put together about a person who bought 14 houses in 3 months and managed to borrow $700,000 more than it cost to buy the homes – I call it ‘negative down payment’. The summary is here:
http://www.mkgappraisal.com/Tieskotter02.htm
and the details are spelled out in a letter I wrote to a long list of people/government agencies:
http://www.mkgappraisal.com/letter01.htm
If you are willing to add a link to my site I would appreciate it. We all benefit if we work together. Thanks in advance.

PS – I would welcome any feedback
